TEHRAN _ India’s Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, rejecting the recently-released United Nations (UN) first-ever comprehensive report on human rights situation in Kashmir, has dubbed it “baseless”.

“The report (on Kashmir) is prepared sitting somewhere else. Assessment made by the UNHRC is without basis. If only they see what is on the ground. Indian Army shows the maximum restraint,” Sitharaman said on Friday.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has also tagged the exhaustive 49-page report, which urged all the parties to end the cycles of violence and ensure accountability for past and present abuses, as “biased and motivated”.

It is the first-ever report detailing human rights violations in Kashmir, across the Line of Control (LoC). However, the main focus of the report is the human rights situation in Indian-controlled-Kashmir between July 2016 – when there was a mass uprising following rebel commander Burhan Wani’s killing – and April 2018.

When the report was released last month, Pakistan’s permanent representative in the UN Farukh Amil welcomed the recommendations made in the report to form a Commission of Inquiry to investigate human rights abuses in Indian-controlled Kashmir. But India reacted sharply to it, terming it “fallacious, tendentious and motivated,” a lodged a formal complaint with the world body.
