Austria, Iran Sign Letter of Understanding on Industrial Cooperation

TEHRAN - Iranian Minister of Industries Gholam-Reza Shafei and Austrian Minister of Economic Affairs Johann Farnleitner in Tehran on Sunday signed a letter of understanding to cooperate in industry sector and carry out joint investment projects in third countries in Central Asia. The agreement was signed at a session of Tehran-Vienna Joint Economic Commission. The two officials agreed to launch joint venture for production of auto parts, wagons, trams and trains through cooperation between Iranian Pars Wagon Company and Austrian firm of Siemens. According to the letter of understanding, the two countries would cooperate in the field of cement industry, power plant, refinery, piping drinking water, producing paper and semi-conductors through joint investment.

The two countries would also cooperate in agriculture, cattle-breeding, forestry, urban development, construction and technological know-how to prevent natural disasters. In accordance with the agreement, Austria which will undertake the six-month periodic pesidency of the European Union (EU) will help Iran remove obstacles in the way of promoting Iranian non-oil exports to Europe. Meanwhile, Iranian Minister of Roads and Transport Mahmoud Hojati and Austrian Minister of Economic Affairs Johann Farnleitner in Tehran on Sunday discussed ways to develop transport cooperation between the two countries.

Hojati said Iran would cooperate with Austria in air, land and sea transportation. He said Iran has launched investment to build Bafq-Mashhad, Kerman-Zahedan railways and called for mutual cooperation in manufacturing railway passenger cars, rails and spare parts. Hojati said Iran is providing the Third Five-Year Development Plan and voiced interest in Austrian cooperation with Iran in transport sector. Farnleitner expressed pleasure with the development projects carried out in Iran. He said presence of considerable number of Austrian companies in Tehran to attend the fourth session of Tehran-Vienna joint economic commission indicated Austria's interest in the Iranian market.
