UN 80: A Call for Unity against Unilateralism
BEIJING - Eighty years ago, in the aftermath of the devastating world wars, nations united to create the United Nations, opening a new chapter in global governance. Since then, the UN has reached key milestones in promoting international cooperation and addressing global challenges. However, today, it faces growing challenges as powerful nations prioritize unilateral actions over collective decision-making. The shift towards unilateralism is eroding the once-cooperative global governance system.

Unilateralism and regulatory policy
International law is the result of multilateralism and the functioning of international governmental organizations. Over the past decades, international decisions, to some extent, have been reflections of unilateral mechanisms developed and endorsed by certain world powers outside the framework of international law. Such mechanisms continue to permeate basic pillars of international law, imposing the will of the world’s major powers on many international subjects.
