Humiliated by Hezbollah: Israel turns to industry to help foil drone attacks

TEHRAN- Israel is still reeling from the fallout of a drone attack carried out by Hezbollah against one of its military bases near the port city of Haifa at the weekend.

The Lebanese resistance movement hit the Golani Brigade’s base, an elite Israeli infantry unit south of Haifa on Sunday.  The aerial vehicle penetrated Israeli air defenses undetected killing several soldiers and injuring dozens of others.

The drone conducted its mission successfully without triggering Israel’s alert systems.

Now, the regime of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has turned to industry to bolster his military’s ability to intercept aerial drones.

The Israeli Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday that it has launched a competition among eight large and small companies.

"After analyzing the trial results, the Defense Ministry will select several technologies to enter an accelerated development and production process. This aims to deploy new operational capabilities within months," it said.

The Hezbollah drone attack has turned the spotlight on Israel’s vulnerability which receives huge amounts of military equipment from Western countries, in particular the United States.
