TEHRAN-Speaking at the 6th World Media Summit in China, Mohammad Mahdi Rahmati, the CEO of Mehr Media Group (which consists of Mehr News Agency and English-language daily Tehran Times), emphasized the crucial role of people-to-people exchanges in the success of the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative. 

He highlighted the importance of cultural and human connections, alongside economic benefits, in revitalizing the ancient trade route at the summit underway in Urumqi, China.

He noted that the Belt and Road Initiative seeks to revitalize ancient trade routes and foster collaboration. "The BRI is more than just an economic concept," Rahmati stated. "It is a vision driven by China's human-centered development model, emphasizing the interconnectedness of economy, culture, and people for sustainable progress. The cultural and human exchanges are perhaps even more crucial than economic benefits for the people of the Silk Road." 

He stressed the significance of intercultural dialogue and shared values in strengthening the BRI. "When a shared understanding and consensus among the people regarding common values emerge," he said, "the Belt and Road Initiative will become more deeply rooted, and cultural and economic exchanges among participating countries will expand." 

Rahmati concluded by emphasizing the importance of mutual learning and respect among civilizations, drawing upon the legacy of Zheng He, the Chinese admiral and explorer who sailed in the 15th century. "His influence in Iranian history is so profound that he feels as though he was born and lived in Iran," he said, highlighting the impact of cultural exchange. 

"We have much to learn from one another, and by fostering these connections, we can keep the spirit of the Silk Road, now manifested in the Belt and Road Initiative, alive." 

He also underscored the significance of supporting the Palestinian people's struggle for peace and dignity. "The right of the Palestinian people to live in peace, dignity, and without humiliation is paramount," he stated. "As long as people like Ziad Khaddash, a Palestinian writer whose book vividly portrays the humiliation and injustice faced by his people, are alive, their struggle will not be forgotten."
