TEHRAN—Mazandaran’s governor general has said the northern province is set to attract two million foreign travelers per annum by the end of President Ebrahim Raisi’s administration in 2025.

“Mazandaran has set a target to host two million foreign tourists per annum by the end of the 13th [government] administration,” Seyyed Mahmoud Hosseinipour said on Tuesday.

According to Hosseinipour, Mazandaran is still unknown to potential overseas holidaymakers, though it is a major destination for domestic travelers.

Sandwiched between the towering Alborz mountain range and the Caspian Sea, the picture-perfect province attracted some 1.8 million domestic travelers on August 1 and 2, which were national holidays declared by the government due to a heat wave.

The province’s ever-present green landscapes provide a perfect backdrop for hiking, biking, and exploring. Visitors can take a stroll at the stunning Larijan hot springs, one of the most famous natural attractions in the region, and relax after a long day of exploring.

The varied nature of the province features plains, prairies, forests, and rainforest stretching from the sandy beaches of the Caspian Sea to the rugged and snowcapped Alborz sierra, including Mount Damavand, one of the highest peaks and volcanos in Asia. More than 800 registered historical and cultural sites, 338 km of shorelines, mineral springs in jungles and mountains, waterfalls, and caves are among the major tourist attractions in the province.
