National Trust Party chair resigns as party chair

TEHRAN –Mehdi Karroubi on Monday resigned from his post as the chairman of Iran’s National Trust Party.

Announcing his resignation while still under house arrest, the 2009 election opposition leader wanted his fellow party members to take Rasoul Montajabnia as the new chairperson, IRNA reported.

The new leader of the reformist party has acted as Karoubi’s deputy so far. Karoubi said he was resigning for the good of the party.

Iran is anticipating a new presidential election in May 2017.
