Iran’s Hassan Yazdani takes freestyle wrestling gold in Rio

Rio de Janeiro – After winning bronze in three different wrestling classes, Hassan Yazdani claimed first wrestling gold medal of these Olympic Games for Iran.

Yazdani scored the winning points just seconds from the end of the under-74kg title bout against Russian opponent Aniuar Geduev who had been bleeding heavily throughout the contest.

Due to a cut above Geduev’s eye suffered in a previous bout, the Russian came out with a bandage around his head.

The match had to be stopped several times for Geduev to receive treatment.

In between the stoppages, Geduev posted three takedowns worth two points apiece in the opening period. Yazdani battled back in the second period to cut the score to 6-4, then got a two-point takedown inside the final five seconds to make it 6-6. By virtue of getting the final score, Yazdani gained the advantage on criteria and sealed the comeback win.

Jarayil Hasanov of Azerbaijan beat Uzbekistan's Bekzod Abdurakhmonov 8-7 for bronze. European champion Soner Demeritas won a battle of the bushy beards to snare the other bronze medal, beating Galymzhan Usserbayev of Kazakhstan 6-0.

Iranian weightlifters Kianoush Rostami and Sohrab Moradi have already won two gold medals in the 85kg and 94kg weight categories respectively.

In Greco-Roman wrestling, Saeid Abdevali and Ghasem Rezaei have claimed two bronze medals in the 75kg and 98kg.

Kimia Alizadeh has won a bronze medal in the women's -57kg taekwondo.

Freestyler Hassan Rahimi also snatched a bronze medal in the 57kg.
