QAZVIN - National Police Chief Esmaeil Ahmadi-Moqaddam said on Wednesday that about two-thirds of those persons arrested in the post-election unrest have been freed and a number of others will be released within days.

He told reporters in Qazvin that those demonstrators who resorted to violence and those who played an “active role” in provoking unrests will be handed over to judicial bodies.
The police chief had previously said that 1,032 were arrested during skirmishes in Tehran.
After President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was re-elected in the June 12 presidential election, the supporters of Ahmadinejad’s main challenger, Mir-Hossein Mousavi, took to the streets in major cities to protest the election results. Mousavi and other presidential contender Mahdi Karroubi claimed election fraud.
------UK role in Iran violence unquestionable
Ahmadi-Moqaddam has also said there is no question that Britain has played a role in the post-election riots in Iran.
""The role that the British embassy (in Tehran) and the BBC have played is too obvious to be denied,"" IRNA quoted Ahmadi-Moqaddam as saying on Thursday.
Iran blames foreign powers especially the UK for interfering in its internal affairs and for playing a significant role in fueling the post-vote unrest.
Tehran-London relations turned sour after nine local members of the British Embassy staff were detained over their role in fomenting mass public protests following the June 12 vote.
However, the Iranian Intelligence Ministry released most of the detainees following investigations into their role in the post-vote unrest
