TEHRAN Iran on Tuesday commissioned the production line of Peugeot 206, the press reported Wednesday.

Industries and Mines Minister Es'haq Jahangiri, attending the function held in Iran Khodro industrial group, told reporters that restrictions have been scrapped against 1,000 items.

"Auto manufacturing industry is one of the pioneering industries in the country and it must further develop under the aegis of automakers' experience," he said.

Jahangiri laid emphasis on the qualitative and quantitative growth of the auto industry over the past years, saying the government supports auto manufacturing industry.

He said that presently demand for cars has outstripped the supply.

Jahangiri said that the Ministry of Mines and Metals seeks to do the best to promote auto-production both quantitatively and qualitatively.

He said that the cost price would be lowered under better circumstances, noting: "We will probably have sales on installments from this (Iranian calendar) year or the next".

20,000 peugeot 206 is to be produced and supplied to the market by the end of the current Iranian calendar year which started March 21.

20 to 25 percent of the produced cars are to be exported to France.

The production is forecast to increase to 50,000 for the next Iranian year (starting March 2002), according to IRNA.
