TEHRAN-The 7th BRICS Media Summit is underway in Moscow, Russia, with representatives from Iranian media including the Tehran Times, Mehr, and IRNA in attendance. The summit was inaugurated on September 13 and will run until September 17.

The heads of leading media structures of the BRICS countries, as well as media outlets of states that have expressed interest in expanding cooperation with the association, have been invited to the work of the 7th summit.

Mohammad Mahdi Rahmati, the managing director of Mehr Media Group, and Mohammad Sarfi, the editor-in-chief of the Tehran Times, are among the Iranians participating in the event.

During panel discussions with the participation of experts and officials, it is planned to discuss the role of the BRICS media community in strengthening stability in a multipolar world, as well as technological aspects of information interaction between the countries of the association. The TASS news agency is the organizer of the event.

BRICS is an informal intergovernmental association created in 2006 at the initiative of Russia. Its co-founders were Brazil, Russia, India and China, from whose names in English the acronym BRIC was formed. When South Africa joined in 2011, the association was called BRICS. After Iran, Egypt, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia joined in 2023, the name BRICS was retained, although the organization is often informally referred to as BRICS+.

The 10 BRICS countries account for 46 percent of the world's population and about 30 percent of the world economy. The association is non-bloc in nature and is not directed against third parties; its goal is to develop comprehensive cooperation between member states. BRICS participants successfully interact in the economic, cultural, scientific and technical spheres. There is no permanent headquarters or secretariat; the chairmanship and coordination of activities is carried out by the country hosting the summit.

Media summits have been held within the BRICS framework since 2015. The initiator of the creation of such a platform for dialogue between the leading media of the association's states was the Chinese news agency Xinhua.
