TEHRAN- The spokesman for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the formation of an interim government in Bangladesh headed by Muhammad Yunus. 

In a statement on Saturday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Nasser Kanaani, expressed his hope for the complete restoration of peace in Bangladesh, reflecting the desires of its people. 

He also voiced hope that a general parliamentary election would soon take place, leading to the establishment of a formal government.

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has returned to Bangladesh to lead an interim government. This follows weeks of student-led protests that resulted in the resignation and flight of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India.

The protests against the government's job quota system have resulted in hundreds of deaths, thousands of injuries, and the detention of several opposition political figures.

At least 366 people died and thousands of people were arrested as security forces sought to quell the unrest.

Yunus has taken the oath as the “chief adviser” to the caretaker government. His primary responsibility is to oversee the democratic process leading up to the elections.
