Sustan wetland: Gilan’s human-made marvel amidst nature’s splendor
TEHRAN - In the lush landscapes of Gilan, Iran, lies picturesque Sustan wetland within the verdant city of Lahijan, often hailed as the jewel of the province.
Remarkably, Sustan wetland, devoid of natural origins, was created less than a century ago by locals to irrigate their agricultural lands.
Located near the village of Sustan, the wetland is approximately 5 kilometers southeast of Lahijan and around 50 kilometers southeast of Rasht, the province’s capital. Sustan borders the village of Kooh Bijar to the north and Lahijan to the south and west.
The word “Sustan” is derived from two parts, meaning “stone mountain” in Gilaki-local language-, taken from a village near the wetland.
Sustan wetland in Lahijan stands out as one of the most vital habitats for lotus and water lily. Surrounded by towering mountains and unique vegetation, this freshwater marsh enriches Lahijan’s natural charm.
During their migratory journey, birds such as teals and coots choose this extraordinary landscape as a stopover.
it’s recommended to visit Sustan wetland in the morning, as the floating lotus flowers bloom during daylight hours, offering a unique experience of the lush green surroundings.
The best time to visit the wetland is undoubtedly during spring and summer. The blooming lotus flowers, lush greenery, and wildflowers create a picturesque view of the wetland area.
However, it’s important to note that due to its artificial nature, Sustan wetland may have limited water during the hot months of the year.
Although the marshy flowers wither as the cold season approaches, the arrival of migratory birds signals a renewed beginning. Whether you choose to visit Sustan wetland during the cold months or prefer the warmth of sunny days, the region’s rare wildlife species are always present to offer you a delightful experience.
