Iraq seeking Iran’s expertise in building dams, water management
TEHRAN - Iraqi President, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, has said his country looks forward to more cooperation with Iran, especially in the field of building dams and water management.
Rashid has also praised Iran's experience in building dams and sewage projects.
He made the remarks in a meeting in Baghdad on Monday with Mohammad-Kazem Al-Sadegh, the ambassador of Iran to Iraq, ISNA reported
During the meeting, Rashid revealed that Iraq is working on building dams to regulate consumption and benefit from rainfall.
“Work is underway to build two dams to utilize the amount of rainfall and ration water consumption,” the Iraqi President, Rashid, stated at the meeting, adding that Iraq looks forward to more cooperation, especially in the field of building dams and water management, indicating that work is underway to establish dams to benefit from rainfall and regulate water consumption, according to Shafaq News.
Iraq experienced large rainfalls and floods the last week, filling up water reserves that have contributed positively to agriculture.
The country heavily relies on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers for its water supply, which originates from upstream countries. However, changes in upstream water management policies, recurrent droughts exacerbated by climate change, and poor water management practices have strained water resources in the country.
The depth of relations between Iraq and Iran and the importance of expanding and developing areas of bilateral cooperation in a way that serves the interests of the two neighboring peoples and the peoples of the entire region were also discussed at the meeting.
In turn, Ambassador Al-Sadegh reiterated Iran's supportive position for Iraq in protecting its security and stability, affirming the Iranian leadership's keenness to enhance relations between the two countries in various fields and expand the horizons of cooperation in a way that fulfills the aspirations of the Iraqi and Iranian peoples.
The envoy pointed out that an Iranian delegation will visit Iraq for talks on benefiting from surface water.
