TEHRAN – Two Iranian artists are taking part in the 37th Surajkund International Crafts Mela in India.

Two artists, experts in Sermeh doozi (Sermeh embroidery) from Zanjan Province and paper marbling from Tehran Province, are presenting their crafts at the event.

Sermeh doozi is a traditional Iranian style of embroidery, which is estimated to date back to the Achaemenid era (c. 550 – 330 BC). In this style of embroidery, gold and silver threads are utilized to make decorating patterns, mostly paisley patterns, on the surface of a fabric, mainly termeh, which is a type of expensive Iranian handwoven cloth. The combination of termeh and gold and silver threads makes Sermeh doozi, which is widely considered a luxury handicraft product by Iranians.

Paper marbling is a method of aqueous surface design, which can produce patterns similar to smooth marble or other kinds of stone

The Surajkund Mela is a large craft fair showcasing India's diverse handicrafts and features regional and international crafts, handlooms, and customs, as well as cuisine and music from across the world. Drawing over one million visitors, including numerous foreign tourists, it stands out as one of the world's largest handicraft exhibitions, providing a glimpse into the cultural diversity, arts, crafts, and weaving of India.
