Israel’s menace to use nukes weakens TPNW: Iranian Foreign Ministry

TEHRAN- Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman has criticized a Zionist regime’s minister for his comments about the possibility of dropping an atomic bomb on Gaza, saying such a threat undermines the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Nasser Kanaani denounced comments by far-right Israeli Minister Amichai Eliyahu, who suggested dropping atomic bombs on Gaza was a viable option against Hamas.

He added that such comments should be taken seriously in light of the atrocities of the Israeli regime with a large nuclear arsenal.

According to Jane's Defence Weekly, Israel is the sixth nuclear power in the world. The Janes has also said that Israel has 100 to 300 nuclear warheads, which is equal to England’s nuclear warheads.

“We hope the United Nations would appropriately and immediately take care of this issue as a threat to international peace,” he stressed.

When asked in a radio interview on Sunday whether the Israeli regime should drop atomic bombs on Gaza, Eliyahu said that is an option.

TPNW, which entered into force on 22 January 2021, prohibits member states from engaging in any activities related to nuclear weapons, including the use, threat of use, production, development, possession, and stationing of these weapons.

Elsewhere in the presser, Kanaani criticized some Western nations for unleashing the “barbaric Zionist regime”, saying Westerners who claimed support for international peace now remain silent on the threat of Israel’s use of nuclear weapons.

The spokesman went on to highlight that the Zionist regime’s nuclear threat reveals the extent of its humiliation in the face of the Palestinian nation and indicates that Israel has no red lines and no respect for international law.

“This (Israeli) threat shows that the Zionist regime poses a real threat to international peace and security more than ever,” he added.

“U.S. complicit in carnage committed by Israel”

Kanaani also said that the United States is Israel’s accomplice in its bloody war against the besieged Gaza Strip, accusing Washington of holding international peace hostage.

“During the current developments, the U.S. has shown that it is standing by the occupying regime with all its strength. The United States is practically part of the war, not part of the solution,” he said.

He added, “It is a source of regret that the United States has taken the Security Council and international peace hostage by using its power.”

Kanaani noted, “The Zionists’ barbaric acts against the Palestinian people cannot be counted, and this new age genocide is taking place daily before the eyes of the world with the support of several Western regimes, especially the United States.”

Blinken’s regional tour

About the tour of U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to the region and his accusations against Iran, the spokesman said the U.S. effort to baselessly accuse Iran for the October 7 attack on the Zionist regime is in line with Washington’s policy to divert public opinion from the country’s complicity in the Israeli atrocities in the Gaza Strip.

“We believe that the U.S. is not a solution but one side of war,” Kanaani pointed out.

The spokesman reiterated the Islamic Republic’s position that Tehran has never told any group or person what to do or what not to do, and this is confirmed by the Palestinian Hamas resistance movement and others.

He went on to say that the October 7 operation against the Zionist regime was a completely Palestinian decision, and such accusations will not absolve the White House from its responsibility for the crimes in Gaza.

The root of anti-U.S. measures in the region is the U.S. policies and behavior towards the regional nations, he underlined.
