Tehran cautions Israel to steer clear of miscalculation
TEHRAN- Iran’s UN envoy has reiterated Tehran’s legal right to react strongly to any Israeli threats or illegal deeds while warning against the Zionist regime’s adventurism and malign operations intended to undermine peace and security in the region.
In a letter to UN Security Council President Ferit Hoxha and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday, Saeed Iravani warned the Israeli regime against any potential miscalculation.
What follows is the full text of the Iranian envoy’s letter:
I would like to bring to the attention of the Security Council yet another one of the Israeli regime’s ongoing violations of international law against Iran.
The Israeli regime authorities continue to openly threaten Iran and Iranian officials with military force and terror attacks, the most recent being an inflammatory and warmongering statement made by Mossad Director, David Barnea.
During his speech at the Institute for Counter-Terrorism Policy (ICT) on September 10, 2023, at Reichman University in Herzliya, Mossad's Director resorted to falsehoods and made baseless allegations against the Islamic Republic of Iran, claiming that "Mossad and its international intelligence allies thwarted 27 Iranian attacks against Jews and Israelis abroad." Further, he threatened Iran and Iranian officials with the use of force, terror, and terrorist acts, stating that "Israel would exact a different price from Iran if Israelis or Jews were harmed, including by targeting the “decision-makers” behind the attacks and by hitting back in the heart of Tehran."
The Islamic Republic of Iran strongly rejects all of these baseless allegations. It is clear that such unfounded claims primarily serve to divert attention from the hostile and malevolent policies that this occupying and apartheid regime pursues in the region, notably the daily ongoing atrocities carried out by this regime against the Palestinian people. Additionally, these fabricated accusations are utilized as a pretext by the Israeli regime to justify its horrendous and illegal actions against other nations and sovereign states.
These inflammatory and bellicose statements, which explicitly threaten the officials of a sovereign state of the United Nations with the use of force and terror, not only constitute a flagrant violation of international law and Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter but also serve as a clear illustration of the acts of terrorism this illegitimate regime has always used to maintain its existence.
Furthermore, such rhetoric and bellicose threats should not be interpreted as isolated actions. As previously emphasized in our numerous communications to the Security Council, including the letter dated 1st March 2023 (S/2023/165), the Israeli regime has openly admitted its involvement in acts of terrorism and sabotage activities within Iranian territory.
These acts have targeted Iranian officials, scientists, civilians, and the country's peaceful nuclear infrastructure in recent years. Therefore, the recent bellicose statements make it evident that the Israeli regime must bear responsibility for all criminal and terrorist acts that have already been carried out against Iran and must face the consequences.
While cautioning against the Israeli regime's adventurism and malicious activities designed to destabilize peace and security in the region, the Islamic Republic of Iran firmly reaffirms its legitimate and inherent rights, in full accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter, to respond resolutely to any threats and unlawful acts originating from the Israeli regime.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has consistently and unequivocally stated that it will not hesitate to exercise its inherent and legitimate rights to defend its security and national interests, as well as to protect its people.
In light of the foregoing, the Islamic Republic of Iran calls upon the Security Council to fulfill its obligations and condemn the Israeli regime's belligerent rhetoric and malicious activities, which pose a serious threat to regional peace and security. It is imperative that this regime be compelled to adhere to international law and put an end to its perilous activities in the region.
I would also like to take this opportunity to categorically reject all unwarranted and unjustified references to Iran, as well as the unsubstantiated accusations levelled against my country, by the representative of the Israeli regime in documents S/2023/504 and S/2023/564.
I would be grateful if you would circulate the present letter as a document of the Security Council.
