Kianoush Rostami wins gold at Fajr Weightlifting Cup

TEHRAN – Kianoush Rostami from Iran claimed a gold medal at the 2019 Fajr Weightlifting Cup on Monday.

Rostami took the gold medal by lifting 172kg in snatch and 220kg in clean and jerk for a total of 392kg.

The Latvian weightlifter claimed a silver medal for a total of 362kg and German lifter snatched the bronze after he lifted a total of 355kg.

Rostami had competed at the new bodyweight class of 96kg in Chiang Mai, Thailand in February and won the gold medal with 371kg.

The 27-year-old lifter won gold in the -85kg weightlifting at the Rio Olympics, lifting a world record combined total of 396kg.

The Fajr Weightlifting Cup serves as the 2020 Summer Olympics qualifiers.

The international competition has seven men's weight categories — 61kg, 67kg, 73kg, 81kg, 96kg, 109kg and +109kg.
