Efficiency of power plants to be improved up to 40% by 2021
TEHRAN – The head of Iran’s Thermal Power Plants Holding Company (TPPH) unveiled plans for an increase in the efficiency of the country’s power plants up to 40 percent, IRIB reported on Tuesday.
Mohsen Tarztalab noted that following a development initiative foreseen in the country’s Sixth Five-Year National Development Plan (2016-2021) the average efficiency of the country’s power plants will increase 2.1 percent from the current 37.9 percent.
According to the sixth plan, new power plants in Iran should operate with an efficiency of at least 55 percent.
“The country's thermal power generation capacity has also increased by five percent this year.” Tarztaleb said.
The official put the country’s current reliable power generation output at 53,000 megawatts (MW) of which 48,000 (MW) has been accounted for by thermal power plants.
Iranian energy ministry has been trying to improve the efficiency of the country’s existing power plants as part of efforts to limit harmful emissions and cut fuel consumption.
Iran’s current nominal power generation capacity stands at 79,325 MW.
