Iran-Russia cooperation in terror fight presents ‘successful model’, VP says

TEHRAN – Iranian First Vice President Es’haq Jahangiri said on Thursday that Iran-Russia cooperation in fighting terrorism is a “successful model” in the world, a reference to joint military actions against terrorists in Syria.

Jahangiri made the remarks during a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev in Sochi, where he attended the 16th meeting of the Council of Heads of Governments of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) states.

Jahangiri also said relations between the two countries have been “growing” in various areas.

The vice president also highlighted the importance of expanding cooperation between the two countries in energy sphere.

“Iran welcomes investment of Russian oil corporations and is ready to cooperate and make joint investments with Russia in various spheres especially oil, gas and medicine,” he explained.

For his part, Medvedev called for expansion of cooperation and said that Russian oil corporations are ready invest in Iran.

He also described the future of Iran-Russia cooperation as “bright”.

He also met with Shamshad Akhtar, under-secretary general of the UN and the head of UNESCAP on Friday.

Jahangiri said that all sanctions against Iran should be removed according to the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

“In that case [removal of all sanctions], Tehran will be able to fulfil its commitments in cooperation with the UNESCAP in line with sustainable development. Unfortunately, some sanctions have not been removed ye and the other side has not met its obligations,” he stated.

Jahangiri also called on the UN to help counter environmental problems.

Akhtar said that UNESCAP is ready to help Iran with sustainable development.
