Senior MP calls for expansion of ties with Japan

Japanese official says Tokyo is eager to cooperate with Iran in nuclear and environmental fields

TEHRAN - Alaeddin Boroujerdi, chairman of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said on Saturday the Iranian and Japanese parliaments and governments have good relations which should be expanded.

During a meeting with Japanese State Minister for Foreign Affairs Kentaro Sonoura in Tehran, Boroujerdi said the Iranian people have “positive” view towards relations with Japan and this can serve as a catalyst for expansion of cooperation.

He also said that an “international determination” and “collaborative cooperation” is required to fight terrorism.

“Iran is serious in fighting terrorism. Given the fact that terrorism is not restricted to certain borders fighting terrorism requires international determination and collaborative cooperation,” the senior lawmaker remarked.

Boroujerdi also condemned Saudi Arabia’s war on Yemen which been lingering for about 18 months.

For his part, Sonoura said that the international community should make efforts to establish security in the Middle East.

Sonoura also said that the terrorist groups have no place in Japan.

He also said that his trip to Iran was aimed at expanding cooperation.

Japan is interested in expanding cooperation with Iran in scientific, nuclear, environmental and medical fields, he explained.

The Japanese state minister, who was in Tehran for a day-long visit, also held talks with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi on Saturday.
