Earthquake Hits Khonj, Southern Iran

SHIRAZ, Fars Prov. An earthquake measuring 4.7 degrees on the open-ended Richter scale jolted the city of Khonj in Larestan, in this southern province, at 20:50 hours local time (16:20gmt) Friday. The seismological base of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University registered the epicenter of the quake some 260 km southeast of Shiraz. According to informed officials, the quake has left no casualties but a number of buildings in the ancient part of the Khonj city and in some villages of the region have been damaged.
