Iranian men team wins World Taekwondo Championships

The Iranian men taekwondo team won the world championship for the second time.

South Korea has won the prestigious competitions 20 times in the last 22 editions.
Iran claimed three gold medals in the competitions held at the Traktor Ice Arena in Chelyabinsk, Russia.

Farzan Ashourzadeh seized a gold medal in the men’s -58 kg and Masoud Hajizavareh claimed a gold in the men’s -74 kg.

Mehdi Khodabakhshi also won a gold medal in the -80kg.

Moreover, Kimia Alizadeh made history by becoming the first Iranian woman to win a medal in the World Taekwondo Championships.

She defeated London 2012 gold medal-winner Jade Jones 10-9 in the quarter-final but lost to her Japanese opponent Mayu Hamada 5-2 in the semi-final and won the bronze medal.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani congratulated the country's national taekwondo team on winning the title of the 2015 World Taekwondo Championships.

“Winning the title of the World Taekwondo Championships made the Iranian people happy. I congratulate the victory to the Iranian honorable nation and our taekwondo players and coaches,” Rouhani said.

A total number of 875 athletes from 136 countries took part in the championships.
