Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad has asked for a meeting with the Pope during a visit to Rome, a diplomatic source says.
The Iranian chief executive is among the heads of state expected to visit Italy’s capital to attend the June 3-5 United Nations summit.Vatican sources said earlier this week that it was not yet clear whether Pope Benedict would meet individual heads of state attending the UN event on global food security.
If the meeting is arranged, it would be the first meeting between Pope Benedict and President Ahmadinejad.
The Holy See enjoys diplomatic ties with Iran and the pontiff has met with Iran’s Foreign Minister, Manuchehr Mottaki.
Vatican urges the West to engage Iran to resolve the country’s nuclear standoff.
