Beiranvand controversy: Injury dispute between Persepolis and Iran national team

Beiranvand, goalkeeper of Persepolis and the Iranian national team, will be sidelined for several weeks due his wrist’s injury. This injury to the national team star has sparked a severe dispute between Persepolis and the Iranian national team.

Beiranvand, who joined the national team on March 18th for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, played a crucial role in Iran's 5-0 win against Turkmenistan in Tehran. He also accompanied the team in the return match in Turkmenistan as a substitute.

Nevertheless, he returned to Persepolis after the FIFA duties ended, facing an injury to his hand. The national team medical team released a statement asserting that Beiranvand was not injured during the national team camp and left without any problems.

However, Persepolis countered this claim in a statement, alleging that Beiranvand had sustained an injury while with the national team.

The statement read: “On March 21, 2024, during the first leg match between Iran and Turkmenistan held at Azadi Stadium, Alireza Beiranvand felt pain in his hand after a long-range shot and a clash with an opponent's player, but continued playing. Immediately after the game, the Persepolis goalkeeper informed the national team medical staff about the pain in his wrist. Due to the severity of the pain and in coordination with the national team medical staff, Beiranvand's right wrist was immobilized on the March 22. On the same date, inflammation and ligament rupture in Beiranvand's wrist were clearly evident in the MRI."

In another part of the statement, Persepolis accused the national team officials of lack of transparency: "Considering that Beiranvand has recently started the treatment process, he could be sidelined between four to six weeks. While with better and proper management, this period could have been shorter. Now Persepolis and their fans are paying a heavy price due to the lack of transparency and honesty of the national team officials, and Beiranvand has also been added to the list of injured players from the national team camps."
