TEHRAN – Karaj, the capital of Alborz province, is playing host to a specialized exhibit of handicrafts.

The event, which kicked off on Jan. 24, and is set to continue until January 30, displays a diverse range of Iranian handicrafts that underline the intricate skills and artistic expertise of local craftsmen, Mehr reported.

The event brought together 25 skilled artists, each specializing in various crafts such as carving, marquetry, engraving, woodturning, hand-embroidered leather, leather engraving, leather pyrography, metal embossing, calligraphy, pottery, ceramics, enameling, carpet weaving, traditional embroidery, jewelry making, and more.

Visitors to the exhibition are treated to a visual feast, exploring the myriad forms of expression deeply rooted in the country’s cultural heritage.

The exhibition is not only a platform for the display of art but also serves as a hub for cultural exchange. Visitors have the opportunity to interact with the artisans, gaining insights into the techniques, history, and stories behind each craft. This interaction fosters a deeper appreciation for the time-honored skills that have been passed down through generations.

According to available data, handicraft products worth $2.3 million were exported from Alborz province in the past Iranian calendar year 1401 (ended on March 20, 2023).

Currently, a total of 13 cities and three villages in Iran have been registered by the World Council of Handicrafts as “world cities of handicrafts”. The World Crafts Council is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that was founded in 1964 to promote fellowship, foster economic development through income-generating craft-related activities, and organize exchange programs, workshops, conferences, and exhibitions.
