TEHRAN – Canyons offer a unique and thrilling experience, such as navigating through narrow gorges, rappelling down waterfalls, and swimming through pools of water for those who love adventure and the great outdoors.

Iran, with its diverse and breathtaking landscapes, offers a wealth of opportunities for canyoning enthusiasts. One of the most popular canyons in Iran is Rageh Canyon, or, as some of the locals used to call it, Darrey-e Marg (“Valley of Death”).

The gorge is one of the natural attractions of Kerman province near the city of Rafsanjan. It is known for its towering cliffs, deep gorges, and unusual rock formations where each bend and twist may be greeted with dissimilar features, from massive boulders and conical pillars to narrow passes.

It is not just the natural shapes that will leave you amazed, though. Another highlight of the canyon is the wildlife. Bird lovers, be sure to bring your binoculars so you can do some bird-watching around the canyon.

Eagles are common around here, but even if you don’t see the eagle itself, you’ll be sure to catch sight of its nest, tucked into a quiet corner high above. Pheasants and partridges are among other birds that visitors can explore on foot or by car, and there are plenty of hiking trails and scenic routes to choose from.

Moreover, there are some indications of human presence in this valley, like small handmade holes and caves; but this grand valley, a great reminder of the sheer force of nature, has been created through erosion by water and wind and is still changing.

At the bottom of the canyon, there is a river which, at certain points, needs caution and familiarity with the area to pass.

Rageh Canyon continues for almost 20 km and in some parts, you need to walk through the shallower parts of the river, so make sure you have suitable shoes and equipment.

While the canyon itself is a sight to behold, the area surrounding the canyon is also home to other fascinating attractions as well.

To get there, you need to go to Rafsanjan, either by a short flight or by train which has a stop 40 Km from Rafsanjan or you can take a bus.

The best time to trek the scenic canyon is in the spring or autumn. You’ll notice that in the autumn, the temperature down in the canyon is warmer than above.

A good pair of hiking boots are strongly recommended. Parts of this canyon may require trekking through the water.

Canyoning in Iran is still a relatively new and developing activity, but with an increasing number of tour operators offering guided trips and equipment rentals, it is becoming more accessible to many tourists.
