TEHRAN – A historical British Cemetery, which is situated on Qeshm Island of the Persian Gulf, is to be restored in the near future, the head of the Qeshm Free Zone Organization said on Wednesday.

The British Cemetery and other nearby historical sites should be restored both for tourism and be preserved for future generations, ISNA quoted Afshar Fathollahi as saying on Wednesday.

The cemetery and (the 16th-century) Portuguese fort are symbols of the endurance of the people of the island against tyranny and an emphasis on the freedom-seeking spirit of the Iranian society, the official said during his visit to the graveyard.

Situated next to the village of Basaido, the cemetery belongs to the time of the presence of British citizens on Qeshm Island.

Qeshm is fringed with biologically diverse mangrove forests, attractive beaches, and 60 Bandari villages. Its blistering interior features geologically significant canyons, hills, caves, and valleys, most of which are protected as part of the UNESCO-recognized Qeshm Island Geopark –bliss for nature lovers.
