Prominent Iranian archeologist Mahmoud Mousavi dies

TEHRAN – The prominent Iranian archeologist Mahmoud Mousavi died on Wednesday. He was 78.

He was suffering from lung cancer in recent years.
Mousavi got his BA in archeology from the University of Tehran in 1962. He received Ezzatollah Negahban Award - the father of Iranian modern archeology – in 2014.

He became the manager of the Iranian Center for Archaeological Research in 1987. He also organized the first conference on Iran’s archaeology in 1994.

He has done several excavations in Iran’s historical sites, including Eshkevar region in Gilan Province, Neyshabour old city in Khorasan Province, Mount Khajeh in Sistan and Baluchestan Province, the ancient city of Harireh on Kish Island, and Safi-ad-din Ardabili Shrine in Ardabil Province.

During his career, he headed several archaeological field surveys in Iran and accompanied several groups of archeologists from the U.S., Japan, Italy, Germany, and Belgium.

His funeral procession will be held on Sunday.
