SHIRAZ – An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale struck southern Iran early on Wednesday killing one person and injuring many more.

The 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit Lamerd in Fars Province around 8:30 a.m. local time devastating 30 percent of houses in four villages, local sources told the Mehr News Agency on Wednesday.
The director of the province’s Red Crescent Society and a number of other officials were whisked to the affected region by helicopter.
At least 14 people were injured in the quake, the latest reports said.
The injured immediately received medical attention.
Unfortunately one of the injured succumbed to her injuries in a local hospital, the director of the Red Crescent Society in Fars Province said.
People affected by the earthquakes were provided with temporary shelters and food supplies, he added.
Electricity and water have been restored in the city, reports said.
The Iranian Red Crescent Society director said 100 rescue workers have been dispatched to the province.
