TEHRAN -- An Iranian parliamentary delegation is to depart for Geneva on Tuesday to attend the 171st session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Council to be held from September 23-27.

The delegation, to be led by Ebrahimbai Salami, Head of Iran's Inter-Parliamentary Council, also includes several other Majlis deputies including Seyed Hossein Hashemi, Fatemeh Khatami, Qodratollah Alikhani, and Mohammad Kazem Mortazavi.

In an interview with IRNA, Salami said proposals on several reforms in the IPU will be reviewed by the participant delegations in the meeting, IRNA reported.

This year's meeting will bring members together to discuss reports on meetings of the United Nations Human Rights Commission, Parliamentary Session of Food Summit, the World Summit for Sustainable Development and the UN Special Session on Children.

Another important item on the session's agenda is election of the chairman and secretary-general of the IPU council, he added.

The Geneva-based IPU, founded in 1889, is an association of national parliaments of some 139 sovereign states.

It aims to promote peace, cooperation and democracy among its member countries.
