Minister: Feasibility Studies on Construction of 200 Dams Underway

FARIMAN, Khorasan Province Energy Minister Habibollah Bitaraf said here Tuesday that feasibility studies are underway on the construction of 200 dams in the country.
Bitaraf said a credit line should be opened for the construction of the dams and their construction should be complete within 10 to 15 years.
He predicted a three-percent increase in credit for projects concerning national water resources in the Third Five-Year Economic Development Plan (2000-2005).
Eight Old Dams to Be Reconstructed Meanwhile some Rls.40 billion has been allocated for reconstruction of eight old dams in the country which are considered as cultural heritage, Deputy Energy Minister for Water Resources Rassoul Zargar said on Tuesday.
Speaking to IRNA, he said Kabar and Qomroud dams which date back to 900 years and 6,000 years ago respectively are among these dams.
Some 68 new dams are now under construction at various parts of the country, he said.
Construction of Karkheh, Ilam, Izadkhast dams are to be completed by the year end, he said.
