Iran slams U.S. sanctions on Cuba after overwhelming condemnation at UN
TEHRAN- The spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry denounced the unilateral coercive measures imposed by the United States on Cuba, highlighting the support for Cuba from a significant majority of the United Nations General Assembly members.
Esmail Baqaei stated on his social media account on the X platform that for the 32nd consecutive year, the United Nations General Assembly has condemned the “Unilateral coercive actions” of the United States against Cuba, with an overwhelming majority of its members in agreement.
“187 nations called for an end to the economic embargo on Cuba, with only the Israeli regime and the United States opposing this resolution,” Baqaei noted.
The Iranian spokesperson emphasized the importance of respecting Cuba's sovereignty and called for the immediate lifting of these sanctions, which have had detrimental effects on the Cuban people and their economy.
Baqaei further expressed, “We stand in solidarity with Cuba in its enduring and legitimate fight to uphold its sovereignty, freedom, and dignity.”
The United States has enforced sanctions against Cuba, referred to as the Cuban embargo, since 1962, after the Cuban missile crisis. This extensive economic embargo imposes limitations on trade, financial dealings, and various commercial interactions between the US and Cuba.
The international community has largely criticized these sanctions, with the United Nations General Assembly consistently voting in favor of resolutions urging the cessation of the embargo. Nevertheless, the US has upheld the embargo for more than sixty years, justifying its stance with concerns regarding human rights and democratic governance in Cuba.
This condemnation is consistent with Iran's enduring stance against unilateral sanctions and coercive actions, which it perceives as a breach of international law and an encroachment on the rights of sovereign nations.
