Pezeshkian criticizes UN's response to Israeli actions ahead of General Assembly
TEHRAN – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has voiced strong criticism of the United Nations' response to the actions of the Israeli regime in the region.
Speaking to reporters at Mehrabad International Airport before his departure for New York, Pezeshkian expressed hope that his upcoming participation in the UN General Assembly would allow him to amplify the voices of the Iranian people, particularly their calls for justice and rights.
“The United Nations is a significant organization on the global stage,” he stated. “If it performs its duties effectively, no country would be able to launch attacks on others under false pretenses.”
His remarks came amid the regime’s ongoing genocidal war against the Gaza Strip and escalated attacks across the occupied West Bank as well as its intensified deadly aggression against Lebanon.
On Friday, an Israeli strike wrecked two buildings in the Lebanese capital’s Dahiyeh district during rush hour. At least 45 people, including three children and seven women, were killed and 68 people injured in the strike.
Lebanese Resistance movement Hezbollah confirmed that two of its top commanders, Ibrahim Aqil and Ahmad Mahmoud Wahabi, along with 12 other members, were killed in the strike.
Prior to the Friday attack, the sudden explosion of thousands of booby-trapped devices in Lebanon killed dozens of people and left nearly 3,000 others injured, including the Islamic Republic's ambassador to Beirut. Hezbollah, whose members were among the casualties, blamed the unprecedented attacks on Israel.
At least 41,431 Palestinians, mostly children and women, have been killed and 95,818 people wounded in the war that Israel began on October 7, 2023, following a retaliatory operation by the Palestinian territory’s Resistance movements.
Pezeshkian is scheduled to deliver a keynote speech during the UN General Assembly, which will take place on Tuesday, where he aims to outline Iran's perspectives on various international issues. In addition to his address, he plans to meet with Iranian expatriates living in the United States and engage in discussions with high-ranking officials from other countries.
The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 79) is set to commence on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, with the high-level General Debate beginning on September 24, 2024.
Pezeshkian's participation underscores Iran's commitment to addressing global concerns and advocating for its national interests on an international platform.
