TEHRAN - Yazd’s sports tourism sector is experiencing a significant boost as the city hosts the 2024 Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship, according to a local tourism official.

“The sports tourism sector in Yazd is taking shape and gaining momentum,” Seyyed-Mohammad Rastergari said on Friday, adding that with the hosting of international sporting events, this branch of tourism is thriving.

The official highlighted Yazd’s role as the 2024 Capital of Tourism for Asia Dialogue Member States, adding that last year, the city hosted an international badminton tournament, and now the city is hosting the Asian Club Volleyball Championship, further boosting sports tourism.

He expressed hope that leveraging this opportunity and the presence of top international players will help showcase Yazd’s World Heritage status and the rich, peaceful culture of its people to the world.

“Ongoing hosting of such events and the development of a sports event calendar are positive for Yazd’s tourism industry,” he emphasized. “This initiative can assist travel agencies in creating sports tourism packages and organizing tours in Yazd.”

The Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship, featuring eight teams, kicked off on September 8 in Yazd and will run until September 15.

Sports tourism is a rapidly growing segment of the global tourism industry, encompassing travel for the purpose of participating in or viewing sports events. This niche market includes a wide range of activities, from international sporting events like the Olympics to local and regional competitions.

Sports tourism generates substantial revenue for host destinations through spending on accommodation, food, transportation, and entertainment. It also creates jobs and stimulates investment in infrastructure. Hosting sports events provides opportunities for local residents to engage in and benefit from tourism activities.

With the growing popularity of sports globally, more destinations are investing in facilities to attract sports tourists. This trend is particularly notable in regions looking to diversify their tourism offerings.

There is a rising focus on making sports tourism sustainable, ensuring that it benefits local communities while minimizing environmental impacts.
