TEHRAN- The Iranian police chief has announced that the law enforcement agencies of both Iran and Iraq are working together effectively to ensure the safety and quality of the Arbaeen Walk.

In a recent interview with IRNA, Ahmad-Reza Radan highlighted that before the commencement of the Arbaeen Walk, the Iranian authorities held multiple discussions with the Iraqi Minister of Interior and engaged in regular meetings with the Iraqi Police chief to facilitate and secure the religious event.

Radan stated that the collaboration between the police forces of Iraq and Iran is at an optimal level, noting, “Whenever we requested meetings or made proposals to our Iraqi counterparts, they responded positively, and we reciprocated with our cooperation.”

The commander-in-chief of Iran’s Police further emphasized, “The reduction of wait times at border crossings, the security of travel routes particularly in Iraq, the smooth movement of pilgrims, and the overall safety of travel are all outcomes of the joint efforts and support from the police forces of both nations.”

This year, it is anticipated that approximately five million pilgrims will participate in the Arbaeen procession. A report from the Iranian police indicates that over 80,000 volunteers, along with 12,000 police personnel from Iran, will be on duty around the clock along the routes to the six border crossings in the days leading up to and following the Arbaeen observance on August 25.

The Arbaeen Walk is an annual pilgrimage in Shia Islam, honoring the passage of 40 days after the martyrdom anniversary of Husayn ibn Ali, the third Imam of the Shia. This pilgrimage occurs 40 days after Ashura, the day Imam Husayn was martyred in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE.

Millions of pilgrims, often surpassing 20 million, embark on this journey, covering roughly 80 kilometers (about 50 miles) from Najaf to Karbala in Iraq. The walk serves as a powerful reaffirmation of their dedication to the values upheld by Imam Husayn, including justice and the fight against oppression.
