Israeli minister calls Gaza ceasefire deal a 'dangerous trap'
Israel's far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has labelled a proposed deal involving a ceasefire in Gaza a "dangerous trap" following renewed diplomatic pushes to halt the Gaza war.
Smotrich wrote on X on Friday that any such deal would allow Hamas to regroup. He warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to fall into the "trap."
Qatar, Egypt and the United States, who are acting as mediators in the negotiations, urged Israel and Hamas on Thursday evening to resume talks "in order to close all remaining gaps and begin implementing the agreement without further delay."
Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and US President Joe Biden all signed the joint statement.
Smotrich described the deal as a capitulation agreement that the mediators would impose on Israel.
Following the publication of the statement, Netanyahu’s office said Israel would send a delegation to a location yet to be determined on August 15 in order to "determine the details of the implementation of the agreement."
