TEHRAN – Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian says the goal for his incoming administration is to make Iran a leader in terms of economic affairs in the region.

Pezeshkian's remarks were made during his inaugural speech on Sunday morning, following the official endorsement of his presidency.

"I am grateful to the Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and the noble people of Iran," Pezeshkian expressed. He acknowledged the conscious decision of the electorate, stating, "The people voted with awareness, placing a heavy burden on my shoulders. The Leader, by endorsing me and signing the presidential decree, has officially appointed me to a significant responsibility towards the Iranian nation."

He emphasized the responsibilities outlined in the constitution, which align with the vision set by the Leader. "Our vision is a developed country founded on ethical principles, the preservation of dignity, advanced knowledge, and reliance on human resources," he said.

Pezeshkian outlined the development program's aim for Iran to achieve top economic, scientific, and technological status in the region. "Our country must be capable of producing science and technology, relying on the superior share of human resources and social capital in national production," he stated.

He stressed the importance of security, stability, and a powerful defense system based on comprehensive deterrence, alongside health and wellbeing. He highlighted goals such as equal opportunities, proper income distribution, freedom from poverty and discrimination, a favorable environment, strong work ethics, and full employment.

"Iran should have constructive and effective interaction with the world based on the principles of dignity, wisdom, and expediency," Pezeshkian noted. He reiterated his government's commitment to the Leader's vision and the general policies communicated.

He called for convergence, unity, and national cohesion to implement these policies. "What prevents us from moving forward are selfish desires. The path is clear, and we must move within that policy and vision to achieve what we deserve."

President Pezeshkian pledged to restore the country's dignity and honor through unity, adherence to the law, and cohesion. He sought continued support from the Leader and the people of Iran to address the nation's concerns.

He concluded by expressing gratitude to the Guardian Council, the acting president Mohammad Mokhber, the Minister of Interior, and various political movements and citizens, both within Iran and abroad, for their participation in the elections. Their involvement, he said, reinforced the republic aspect of the system and placed new responsibilities on the country's officials.

The 69-year-old heart surgeon garnered more than 16 million votes against principlist candidate Saeed Jalili, who secured upwards of 13 million out of over 30 million votes cast, with the voter turnout standing at almost 50 percent.

The election was called early after Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi lost his life in a helicopter crash in May.
