FATF, Iran's main obstacle in Shanghai

July 21, 2024 - 22:55

TEHRAN - In a conversation with Davood Aghaei, an expert on international issues, Donya-e-Eqtesad discussed the importance of Iran's membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and said: For years, our country has been facing serious obstacles and problems in the field of international economic and commercial cooperation.

The main reason for these problems is that our country is not a member of FATF. Therefore, we cannot do business with countries and organizations on a proper and legal platform, which is a big obstacle. It is an advantage for us to be a member of this organization when we can form our relations with other member governments of this organization within the legal framework, and take steps towards improving the level of commercial and economic cooperation. This is a major obstacle and we have to consider this issue and try to convince people who are against it internally to accept FATF membership. In fact, we must remove this great obstacle not only within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization but also in our relations in all international arenas and relations with all countries and international organizations.

Iran: Showy diplomacy

The Biden government launched a kind of showy diplomacy to return to the Iran nuclear agreement and resume the obligations under the JCPOA. However, in the face of decision-making processes against Tehran's initiative to determine the task of the negotiations, it got confused and took retaliatory steps against Tehran. The United States, following the implementation of this policy in the nuclear case, faced a strong Iran in the region and developments that both led to the resumption of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia as two important players in the region and strengthened the axis of resistance and, as a result, the Zionist regime's concerns about being isolated became worse. Now, in such a situation, the U.S. authorities make false claims such as shortening Iran's nuclear breakout time, and they have no valid reasons to prove this claim. Therefore, while American officials claim that the nuclear agreement is no longer sufficient to fulfill their ambitions, Iranian officials emphasize that they are only pursuing the revival of the 2015 agreement and are not looking for a new agreement.

Etemad: Europe's critical approach and readiness for interaction

In a note, Etemad addressed the foreign policy of the Pezeshkian government with Europe and the West. The paper said: Contrary to the positive view of the president-elect's note to various countries and regions, the West and Europe have been pointed out from a critical point of view due to unreasonable expectations from Iran, especially in the JCPOA issue. Despite this critical view, Iran's readiness to hold constructive dialogues with European countries has been immediately mentioned. There are three serious obstacles to these cooperations, such as the situation of the war in Ukraine and two possible challenges of the European troika to the JCPOA and Trump's return to power in America. Upon the new approach of the 14th government in politics and foreign relations, a new opportunity has been provided for effective international actors, especially in the West, to engage in more interaction or mutual reconstruction of relations with Iran. Meanwhile, the follow-up of Iran's foreign relations should be pursued simultaneously at two regional and international levels. However, the continuation of the challenge at the international level will significantly affect the effectiveness and operationalization of the regional level, especially from an economic point of view.

Jam-e-Jam: The Islamic Republic will not wait for the Westerners to achieve national interests

Jam-e-Jam wrote about America's disloyalties: The U.S. government has been negotiating with the representatives of our country for all these years and has named the destruction of the peaceful nuclear industry of Islamic Iran as one of its strategic goals in the West Asia region. In addition, the American statesmen have proven many times that they do not adhere to any rules, laws, and promises. However, according to its national and regional interests, the Islamic Republic of Iran will continue to adhere to its obligations unless it decides to change its approach. Iran has strengthened its nuclear capacity and shown that it will not wait to please the Western parties and considers the advancement of national interests as its ultimate goal. Iran considers it logical to return to a bilateral agreement that brings concrete economic benefits to the Iranian nation in exchange for the removal of some limitations and accepts it. The available evidence indicates that there is no need to read out history to prove mistrust of America and show its belligerent nature, and by reviewing the events of the last decade, we can find many specific cases of breach of promise by the Americans.
