TEHRAN – A tragic terrorist attack in Saravan, located in Iran's southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan, has resulted in the death of a police officer.

The attack occurred late Thursday night, targeting a police patrol unit.

According to a statement from the Sistan and Baluchestan Police’s information center, armed assailants in a Peugeot Pars vehicle launched a sudden and violent assault on the patrol unit. The attack left two officers injured, who were subsequently transported to nearby medical facilities.

Despite the efforts of medical staff, one of the injured officers, Captain Ali Motahari, succumbed to his injuries and was declared a martyr.

Following the attack, police forces engaged in a pursuit of the militants, initiating a search operation to apprehend the perpetrators. The police emphasized that precautionary measures are being taken to ensure the safety of civilians during the ongoing operation.

This incident is part of a series of violent attacks in the region. On April 9, five Iranian police officers were killed in an assault by the terrorist group Jaish al-Adl in Sistan and Baluchestan. Jaish al-Adl has a notorious history of conducting terror attacks against Iran.

In a significant counter-terrorism operation on January 16, Iranian forces precisely targeted and obliterated two major strongholds of Jaish al-Adl in Pakistan's southwestern province of Balochistan. The strikes, involving missiles and combat drones, successfully demolished the bases in the Koh-e-Sabz area, known as a key bastion for Jaish al-Adl terrorists.

This military action followed a deadly attack on December 15 of the previous year, where Jaish al-Adl claimed responsibility for an assault on the police headquarters in Rask County. During that attack, 11 police personnel, including officers and conscripts, were killed. Deputy provincial governor for security and political affairs, Alireza Marhamati, reported that six additional police officers were injured during the confrontation. In the ensuing clashes, two terrorists were killed, one was injured and captured, while the rest managed to escape.

The region, which borders Afghanistan and Pakistan, has been a hotspot for such violent incidents, highlighting the ongoing security challenges faced by Iranian forces in maintaining stability and combating terrorism. The Iranian government continues to pursue stringent measures to thwart terrorist activities and protect its citizens from such heinous acts.
