Spokesman urges remembering Palestinians on Ashura day
TEHRAN – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani has called on Muslims worldwide to remember and support the Palestinian people on Ashura Day.
This significant message was shared on Kanaani’s X account on Tuesday, coinciding with Ashura, the day commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hossein, the third Shia Imam.
Kanaani expressed his condolences to Muslims globally on the solemn occasion of Imam Hossein’s martyrdom, honoring him as a symbol of resistance against tyranny who steadfastly opposed cruelty and oppression.
Highlighting the enduring relevance of Imam Hossein’s legacy, Kanaani urged Muslims to embrace the principles of Ashura, advocating for the rejection of tyrants and support for the oppressed. He specifically called on the global Muslim community to stand in solidarity with Palestinian women and children, and to expose the "evil and terrorist identity of Israel and its criminal supporters."
Kanaani’s call for solidarity underscores Iran’s longstanding support for the Palestinian cause and its condemnation of Israeli actions. By invoking the spirit of Ashura, he appealed to Muslims to draw inspiration from Imam Hossein’s unwavering stance against tyranny and to apply those values in their support for Palestinians facing ongoing adversity.
Over nine months into the Israeli war, vast tracts of Gaza lie in ruins amid a crippling blockade of food, clean water and medicine.
The conflict in Gaza has inflicted devastating losses, with Israeli actions since October 7 leading to the deaths of at least 38,664 Palestinians, primarily women and children, and injuring 89,097 others.
As Ashura Day is observed globally, Kanaani’s message resonates with the broader themes of justice, resistance, and the enduring struggle against oppression, urging the Muslim community to unite in their efforts to support the Palestinian people.
