TEHRAN – On Tuesday, a magnitude 5 earthquake caused damage to several historical buildings in Kashmar, a historical city in eastern Iran.

A local official in charge of cultural heritage reported that the earthquake, which struck at a depth of 6 kilometers, inflicted damage on several historical buildings in the area.

Following the quake, Gholamhossein Mohammadian stated, an immediate assessment of the historical sites was conducted.
“Large cracks and partial collapses were observed in some structures,” the official elaborated.
“A thorough evaluation of the damage to the historical buildings will be carried out by my colleagues,” he further brought to light. “Who will then provide a detailed report on the extent of the damage.”
According to Mohammadian, damage and cracks have been identified in the walls and roofs of the Jameh Mosque of Kashmar, Haj Sultan Ulama Madrasa, and Haji Jalal Mosque due to the earthquake.

Kashmar is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and historical architecture. The Grand Mosque of Kashmar, a central religious site, is known for its intricate architectural design and historical significance, serving as a focal point for the local community.
The Haj Sultan Ulama School, another vital landmark, represents the city’s long-standing tradition of religious education and scholarship.
The Haji Jalal Mosque is also a key historical site, noted for its unique construction and cultural importance.
These buildings not only exemplify the architectural prowess of their time but also hold immense cultural and historical value, attracting tourists.
The outcome of damage, however, underscores an urgent need for preservation and restoration efforts to protect Kashmar’s rich historical legacy.
