TEHRAN - Iran's Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, has commended the South African government for its proactive stance against Israel, highlighting its alignment with the enduring legacy of Nelson Mandela's anti-apartheid struggle.

In a statement posted on social media platform X on Saturday, Amir Abdollahian extended congratulations to South Africa, its government, and Naledi Pandor on the occasion of Freedom Day, celebrated annually on April 27.

He underscored South Africa's resolute legal actions against the "genocide" perpetrated by the Zionist regime, praising Johannesburg's unwavering support for Palestine. According to Amir Abdollahian, these actions reflect a continued commitment to Mandela's principles of combating oppression and dismantling apartheid.

Furthermore, Amir Abdollahian emphasized the depth of cooperation between Tehran and Pretoria, attributing this partnership partly to Iran's commitment to multilateralism in its foreign policy approach. He expressed hope for the continued prosperity and well-being of the South African people, along with sustained progress under its friendly government.

In addition, the Iranian diplomat held a telephone conversation with Naledi Pandor, lauding South Africa as a trailblazer in the global fight for freedom. Amir Abdollahian reiterated Tehran's eagerness to collaborate with Pretoria on international issues, while also stressing the importance of advancing bilateral relations.

The mention of South Africa's genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), filed in December following months of Israeli aggression against Palestinians in Gaza, underscored the gravity of the situation. Before initiating legal proceedings, South Africa accused Israel of violating its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention.

The ICJ's interim ruling on January 26, acknowledging the plausibility of Pretoria's claims and ordering provisional measures against Israel, further highlighted the significance of South Africa's legal action. The court mandated the Israeli regime to take steps to prevent genocidal acts and facilitate humanitarian aid to Gaza, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

Given Israel's military offensive in Gaza, which has resulted in widespread devastation and loss, including a significant number of civilian casualties, the importance of international intervention and solidarity with the Palestinian cause has become increasingly apparent. 

At least 34,388 Palestinians have been killed and 77,437 wounded in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7, 2023.

Through diplomatic efforts and legal recourse, nations like South Africa are working to hold perpetrators of atrocities accountable and uphold the principles of justice and human rights.
