TEHRAN – The head of Iran's Parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Committee denounced the Israeli assault on the Iranian consulate in Damascus as a clear indicator of the "diminished strength" of the regime.

Vahid Jalalzadeh attributed this decline to the regime's failures in the Gaza conflict.

Speaking to Iranian state television on Wednesday, Jalalzadeh emphasized the Israeli military's inability to overcome Palestinian Resistance groups in Gaza. He pointed out that this obvious weakness has compelled the Israeli regime to resort to tactics like the "blame game" and perpetrate terrorist assaults.

Expressing concern over the ramifications of such acts of terrorism, Jalalzadeh cautioned against the Israeli regime's efforts to escalate hostilities beyond regional borders. He further criticized the regime's attempts to downplay its human rights violations, especially following incidents like the evacuation of al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.

In his condemnation of Western double standards, Jalalzadeh expressed skepticism about the likelihood of a serious international response to Israel's actions. 

“Through these operations, which are state terrorism, the regime violated all international conventions regarding embassies in the capitals of the world. Unfortunately, we continue to witness the double standards of international bodies and Western countries regarding this terrorist attack,” he noted.

The Iranian lawmaker affirmed Iran's determination to retaliate at an appropriate time and place.

Jalalzadeh asserted that the attack in Damascus reflects the deteriorating position of the Israeli regime, a consequence of its stalemate in Gaza. Despite its claims of having the fifth-largest military globally, the regime failed to subdue several Palestinian Resistance groups after six months of conflict.

Highlighting the violation of international conventions on embassy security, Jalalzadeh criticized the continued double standards of international bodies and Western nations in addressing such terrorist acts. He also condemned the United Nations' passive response to ongoing Israeli atrocities, questioning the extent of crimes needed for decisive international action.

The assault on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, which occurred on Monday afternoon, resulted in the deaths of two Iranian military generals and five accompanying officers who were on a consulting mission in Syria.

Iranian officials have reiterated their country's right to deliver a robust response to the Israeli aggression, which they argue flouted international obligations and conventions.
