TEHRAN- Shapur Square in downtown Tehran is set to host a group of thespians performing the story of the martyrdom of Imam Ali (AS) on Wednesday in the form of tazieh, the Iranian passion play.

Directed by Ahmad Azizi, the Seyyed ush-Shohada Tazieh Group will take the stage to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of the Imam and observe Laylat al-Qadr (The Grand Nights).

The Grand Nights, falling on the 19th, 21st, and 23rd nights of the holy month of Ramadan, mark the occasion during which the entire Quran was sent down to the Prophet Muhammad (S).

The Martydom of Imam Ali, observed on the 21st day of Ramadan, marks the tragic death of Ali ibn Abi Talib, revered as Hazrat Ali, the son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad. An influential figure in Islamic history, Imam Ali was known for his wisdom, courage, and piety.

The event took place in 661 when he was viciously attacked in the Great Mosque of Kufa by Abd al-Rahman ibn Muljam, a Kharijite from Egypt. This cowardly act occurred on the 19th of Ramadan while Imam Ali was deeply engrossed in his prayers, illustrating the brutality of the attack.

Imam Ali's death serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by individuals who hold true to their beliefs, even in the face of adversity. His legacy continues to inspire millions of Muslims worldwide to uphold values of justice, compassion, and the pursuit of righteousness. 

The Iranian passion play tazieh was registered on the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in November 2010.

Tazieh presents religious events, historical and mythical stories and folk tales. Each performance has four components of poetry, music, song and motion.

However, stories about the uprising of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions against the oppressive Umayyad dynasty in 680 CE are more highly regarded by tazieh troupes and audiences.
