The Israeli military announced the death of a soldier killed during fighting in the southern Gaza Strip on Sunday, bringing the toll of slain troops in the ground offensive against the besieged Palestinian teritory to 249.

The military identified him as Sgt. First Class Michael Gal, 29, of the Bislamach Brigade’s 450th Battalion, from Jerusalem.

Israel launched its ground military offensive in Gaza in late October.
