Tel Aviv stalling Gaza peace talks

March 6, 2024 - 19:59
Palestinians offered high level of flexibility for a ceasefire

Amid global demands on the Israeli regime to end its barbaric attacks on Palestinians in Gaza where many are on the brink of famine, Tel Aviv has stalled negotiations despite reasonable grounds to end its genocidal assault.

In a press release published on Wednesday, Hamas declared “the required flexibility to reach a comprehensive agreement aiming to cease the aggression against our people.”

“The occupation continues to evade the commitments of this agreement, especially those ensuring a permanent ceasefire, the return of refugees, the withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and meeting the needs of our people.”

The statement added, “The movement will continue negotiations through intermediary channels to achieve an agreement that fulfills the demands and interests of our people.”

Senior Hamas leader Osama Hamdan says that over the past days the group presented its vision and held positive engagements in Cairo, responding to the proposals from Egypt and Qatar.

He emphasized that at this rate, what the Israeli occupation failed to achieve militarily, it won’t attain through negotiations.

Hamdan stressed that negotiations won’t continue without addressing the ongoing Israeli war of hunger and genocide against the Palestinians, asserting flexibility in negotiations is matched by the group’s readiness to defend the Palestinian people and their sacred sites.

Speaking to reporters in Beirut, he noted Hamas rejects any solution that doesn’t halt aggression and lift the blockade, affirming the resistance’s commitment to sacrifices and accomplishments.

The Hamas leader called on the Islamic world to make Ramadan an opportunity to exert pressure and work towards saving the Palestinians from starvation.

He also called on Arab and Islamic countries to take serious action and implement the decisions of their recent summit to break the siege on Gaza.

Hamdan reiterated the call for countries that are facilitating food convoys to the Israeli regime through their territories to cease such actions.

Additionally, he noted the U.S. administration can end the crisis by halting the supply of weapons to the Israeli occupation and to stop using its veto power in support of Tel Aviv.

He highlighted the hypocrisy of the U.S. administration that claims to stand by humanity, freedom, and justice but is directly complicit in the Israeli onslaught, which unveils the true face of America. It has done nothing to prevent the war crimes in Gaza.

Regarding the aid dropped from the air, Hamdan stated that it only represents a tiny portion of what Gaza needs, calling for aid to be brought in through land crossings and emphasizing that “American aid from the air will not improve Washington’s bloody image.”

The senior Hamas leader also demanded the dismissal of a UN official who presented a “false report without evidence, claiming incidents of sexual violence by the resistance” on October 7 attacks on southern Israel.

Touching on the UN Security Council statement on the Israeli massacre on February 29 that killed and injured at least 800 Palestinians in the Gaza City neighborhood where they had gathered to collect flour, Hamdan said the statement “does not reflect the gravity of the crime.”

Meanwhile, a source with the Palestinian factions has shed further light on the negotiations, saying the resistance has relayed a clear position to mediators that offers a high level of flexibility to achieve a ceasefire.

Speaking to the Al Mayadeen channel, the source underlined that the resistance provided everything necessary for the success of mediation efforts, yet the “occupiers consistently obstructed our endeavors, hindering any progress in negotiations”.

Regarding negotiation demands, the Palestinian resistance leadership reiterated key points: withdrawal of occupation forces, return of displaced individuals to their areas, opening of crossings, and the entry of aid.

“The position of the resistance leadership reflects national consensus, and the occupation leaders should be well aware of this.”

The source concluded that there will be no backtracking in the talks and no release of Israeli captives except by a decision from the leadership of the resistance and through a comprehensive prisoner exchange deal.

The final response of the resistance is in the hands of the mediators as well as the Israeli occupation, which the source said is refusing to comply at the moment.

As the latest phase of negotiations to end the genocidal campaign in Gaza reportedly enters its fourth day, there are growing signs of division among the Israeli leadership that could explain the Israeli refusal to end its indiscriminate war on Gaza, where 80% of the huge death toll are women and children, according to the Pentagon.

Opposition leader and war cabinet minister Benny Gantz has left Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu furious by holding talks with top U.S. and British officials without the Israeli premier’s authorization.

Amid the fractures in the Israeli hierarchy, an increasing number of dead Palestinian children are officially being registered as “starved to death” at Gaza’s hospitals.
