Azerbaijan issues statement on 1st anniversary of attack on embassy in Iran

TEHRAN- Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry has issued a statement on the first anniversary of the attack against its embassy in Tehran.

On Saturday, it said that “one year has passed since the attack against the embassy in Tehran as a result of which one embassy employee lost his life, and two others suffered numerous injuries.”

“Following the incident, Embassy staff members and their families were evacuated due to the grave risk posed to their lives and safety,” the statement read.  

Following the incident, several countries and international organizations issued statements strongly condemning the terror act and stating that the attack on diplomatic missions in international relations is unacceptable.

The statement went on to add that the Azeri side expected that all behind the tragic incident should be brought to justice.

“The Iranian side have regularly updated Azerbaijan regarding the actions taken during the investigation,” it added. 

Expressing sincere condolences to the victim’s relatives, the ministry also strongly condemned the attack, and expected that “Iran will immediately take result-oriented steps to prevent such actions from happening in future.” 

On 27 January 2023, a gunman armed with AK-47 assault rifle stormed the embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Tehran, killing an Azeri national and injuring two others.
