TEHRAN- Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Shahram Irani has confirmed that the Alborz destroyer is currently escorting Iranian commercial ships and oil tankers within the Red Sea.

In early January, the Alborz successfully navigated through the strategically crucial Bab el-Mandeb Strait, marking its official entry into the Red Sea.

The Alborz, an Alvand-class frigate of the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy, is a formidable vessel equipped with a range of advanced weaponry and sensors. Its deployment to the Red Sea is a testament to Iran's commitment to protecting its commercial interests and ensuring the safety of navigation in the region.

Admiral Irani emphasized that the Alborz destroyer operates in areas where "superpowers do not dare to be present," highlighting Iran's willingness to assert its presence and maritime dominance.

He further stated that the Iranian Navy's operations in monitoring and seizing offending oil tankers have been carried out with precision and in accordance with international regulations.

Additionally, Admiral Irani underscored the educational significance of sending Iranian Navy cadets on internships to international waters. He described this as a valuable opportunity for young officers to gain firsthand experience in navigating the harsh conditions of the sea and adapting to the challenges of maritime operations.

The deployment of Iranian warships to the Red Sea has been a persistent feature since 2009, driven by the country's desire to safeguard shipping routes and protect its economic interests. This recent deployment comes amid rising tensions in the region following the devastating conflict in Gaza, where Israeli military operations have caused widespread civilian casualties.
