ATHENS Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is expected to meet Iranian President Mohammad Khatami at the sidelines of the Islamic Summit to be held in Qatar in November, international Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat reported on Wednesday.
The paper said arrangements for the Egyptian-Iranian summit will be the focus of a meeting between Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa and his Iranian counterpart Kamal Kharrrazi in New York where both ministers are attending the UN Millennium Summit'.
Quoting Egyptian sources in Cairo, the paper said that there is nothing that prevents the restoration of full diplomatic ties between Egypt and the Islamic Republic of Iran after a break of twenty years.
Relations between the two presidents, Mubarak and Khatami, are good and the two leaders exchanged telephone calls more than once in the last two months, said the London-based Arabic paper.
Moussa and Kharrazi are also to discuss Islamic coordination over the issue of Al-Qods and the progress of bilateral Cairo-Tehran ties.
According to earlier press reports, Mubarak was expected to meet Khatami at the sidelines of the Millennium Summit in New York, but the Egyptian president is not attending the summit.
Instead, he is being represented by Foreign Minister Amr Moussa.
